I'm not sure I can really call these easy miles. I hiked with three other freinds to the top of Chinscraper summit starting in the dark at 7am. We climbed 4,000 feet and then ran down the other trail back to the base. Awesome. I love running on the trail. However, I'm paying for it now with soreness!

Do you start Chinscraper from the Fernwood trailhead? I live in Fruit Heights, so my usual run is along the BST starting in Kaysville, but I've usually only run about 5 miles in, which takes me up the Great Western just a little, and then running back (Its a good 10 miles that you can run almost the entire time). Looking forward to exploring the trails around here more, so I like to learn what I can - though a lot of the exploring will probably have to wait for spring!

Yes we started from Fernwood. If you head North toward the Castle house, there is what appears to be a dirt road that takes off sharply to the right just at the top of the hill and not yet above the house. This is a steep way to get up to Chinscraper summit (and when you get to the top the trail is not obvious to a first timer). We dropped over the top of Chinscraper and came down the other side and down the Great Western Trail. Alternatively you can go on the trail past the castle house, cross the bridge and up the hill to the Great Western fork. Take the right fork and all the switchbacks up to the old hunting camp (metal chair hanging from the pines) at the base of Chinscraper. Beautiful climb. You can run fast down that northern side!

Yep. I think I know exactly where you're talking. I'll have to give it a go sometime. Thanks!!
